You've seen
them around before, at Contraband Days, Mardi Gras and other community
events. They work on patrol, stakeouts and on the waterways. They are
members of the local community just trying to make a difference, by doing
what they enjoy, helping the Sheriffs Office, and the Parish. They are
volunteers, numbering up to 130 strong. They are the Calcasieu
Parish Sheriff's Reserve Deputies.
The Reserve Program is based on a very simple concept. "The primary
purpose for the reserve program is to encourage citizen involvement and
support law enforcement."
The reserves travel out of the
parish to aid other agencies who are short on law enforcement manpower for
special events.
The requirements for becoming a Deputy are few but interesting. There is no
age limit, but one must be in good health. A two-week night school and
three weekend training program is mandatory. These schools are held after
regular business hours and on weekends to accommodate applicants who have
regular jobs. Reserves must work at least 16 hour a month, attend monthly
meetings and qualify with a hand gun.
