Descendants of Richard Bailey

Generation No. 1

1.RICHARD1 BAILEY was born Bet. 1775 - 1780 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 1849 in Lynnville (Waco), Tennessee. He married (1) ELIZABETH MELTON October 12, 1805 in Warren County, Kentucky, daughter of ELISHA MELTON and MARTHA UNKNOWN. She was born Abt. 1789 in Virginia, and died Bef. 1830 in Lynnville, Tennessee. He married (2) CHARLOTTE "LOTTIE" FOSTER Abt. 1830, daughter of DRURY FOSTER. She was born Abt. 1783 in South Carolina or Kentucky, and died Bet. 1860 - 1868 in Giles County, Tennessee?.

Notes for RICHARD BAILEY:

Notes for ELIZABETH MELTON:

  • It is not clearly known exactly when Elizabeth Melton died or how many children she had but some of their children; Sarah, Nancy, and Elijah, may have been named after her siblings.

Notes for CHARLOTTE "LOTTIE" FOSTER:

  • There is some debate as to if Lotty (also called Lackey or Locky) was a Hickman or a Foster, who were both neighbors of Richard Bailey. According to the Dawes Roll, testimony given by Willis Anderson Bailey and Beverley P. Boatright, convey Lottie was a Foster.
  • This case from 1854, also supports this theory:

    File Box G - 3 CASE 1101 1854

Miles H. Grisham and others vs. Alexander Esselman and others

Thos. Grisham departed this life in Giles Co. in the year 1840 leaving surviving his widow Lucy and children to wit: son James died in 1846 never having been married, Jubal, Miles H., Drury E., William M., Samuel Y., Baley B. Grisham of Tishamingo Co. MS., Lucy Grisham (widow) of Tishamingo Co. MS. vs. Alexander Esselman, David Waldrop, Edward B. Hickman, Wm. R. Cannon, Steven Follis, Archibald Strickland all of Giles Co., John Biffle of Texas. Thos. Grisham made an Entry of 65 acres on Lynn Creek in 1828, at the corner of John Hambrick's occupant claim of 200 acres. John Grisham made another Entry in 1834 for 130 acres. Lucy Grisham sold land to John Biffle. Then Biffle sold land to Esselman, Follis, and Caskey. William Bailey gave a deposition that Thomas Grisham was his uncle by marriage, that he, Thomas Grisham married aunt of William Bailey.

(Thomas's wife, Lucy Grisham (Gresham)'s maiden name was Foster. She and Lottie Bailey were both possible daughters of Drury Foster, neighbor of Richard Bailey. Also worth mentioning, the John Hambrick mentioned is William A. Bailey's father-in-law.)

Anderson Trice and others appointed Commissioners to allot to Charlette Bailey widow of Richard Bailey, deceased.

Children of RICHARD BAILEY and ELIZABETH MELTON are:

        2. i. WILLIAM A.2 BAILEY, b. Abt. 1811, Kentucky; d. 1887, Lynnville, Tennessee.

        3. ii. JOHN RICHARD BAILEY, b. Abt. 1813, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. December 1849, Caglesville, Arkansas or Lynnville, Tennessee?

        4. iii. ANDERSON BAILEY, b. Abt. 1815, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. February 1870, Pope County, Arkansas.

        5. iv. MASTON G. BAILEY, b. Abt. 1817, Giles County, Tennessee; d. Aft. 1880.

        6. v. ELIZABETH "BETSY" BAILEY, b. March 15, 1819, Giles County, Tennessee; d. January 23, 1893, Westpoint, Tennessee.

        7. vi. MARTHA "PATSY" ANN BAILEY, b. December 05, 1820, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. October 16, 1877, Farmersville, Texas.

        8. vii. NANCY P. BAILEY, b. November 11, 1822, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. December 08, 1897, Farmersville, Texas.

        9. viii. SARAH BASS BAILEY, b. January 24, 1824, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. January 27, 1909, Maury County, Tennessee.

ix. ELIJAH BAILEY, b. Abt. 1825.

Notes for ELIJAH BAILEY:

  • There is some debate whether Elijah may have been from Richards second marriage to Lottie. But according to the 1850 census, he does not reside with her and her younger two daughters preferring to live with the Hubble family instead. (I've not been able to find Elijah Bailey on later census records. D. H.)

He also may have possibly been named for either Elizabeth Melton's brother, Elijah Melton, who died in the War of 1812, or her uncle Elijah Melton.

Children of RICHARD BAILEY and CHARLOTTE FOSTER are:

        x. MINERVA JANE2 BAILEY, b. Abt. 1831; d. Aft. 1880.

        Notes for MINERVA JANE BAILEY:

  • It's very possible Manerva Jane never married. According to the 1860 census, she resided at the boarding house of Elizabeth Stivers.  In 1870, she lived in Arkansas with her sister, Mary Margaret's family and by 1880, census reveals she returned to Giles County and worked as a housekeeper and servant for the Thomas R. Boatright family. There appears to be no other records on her.  Did she eventually follow those Bailey's who went to Arkansas as researcher Robert Craig suggested?  According to descendants of her sister Mary Bailey, Manerva did go back to Arkansas shortly after her sister died in 1881, but returned to Tennessee shortly after.

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM A.2 BAILEY(RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1811 in Kentucky, and died 1887 in Giles County, Tennessee. He married (1) QUINTELLA HAMBRICK Abt. 1830 in Maury Co, Tennessee, daughter of JOHN HAMBRICK and ELIZABETH O'DONNELL. She was born 1814 in Barren County, Kentucky, and died Abt. 1852 in Giles County, Tennessee. He married (2) LAURA HYATT POTEET February 02, 1862 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. She was born 1824 in Columbia, South Carolina, and died 1902 in Alvord, Texas.

Notes for QUINTELLA HAMBRICK:

  • Quintilla may have been born near the Big Barren River.   Her grandfather owned land on the Big Barren at that time.
  • Her mother, Elizabeth O'Donnel had a much younger sister named Rosannah who married Charles Johnston Bailey of Barren County, Kentucky. They also came to Giles County around the same time as Richard Bailey but eventually settled in Lawrence County.
  • According to testimony of neighbor Beverly Boatright (b. ca. 1829), Quintilla died when he was about 21 or 22.

Children of WILLIAM BAILEY and QUINTELLA HAMBRICK are:

        11. i. ELIZABETH JANE3 BAILEY, b. Abt. 1831, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. Aft. 1880.

        12. ii. WILLIS ANDERSON BAILEY, b. April 04, 1833, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. March 26, 1916, Granite, Oklahoma.

        13. iii. JOHN MARTIN BAILEY, b. March 1836, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. Bet. 1863 - 1873.

        14. iv. THOMAS BENTON BAILEY, b. October 1838, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. December 25, 1905, Kenton, Tennessee.

        v. BERRYMAN WAKEFIELD BAILEY, b. April 15, 1841, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. December 18, 1884, Paris, Texas; m. MARY, January 1870, Decatur County, Tennessee; b. Abt. 1840; d. Aft. 1880, Texas.

        Notes for BERRYMAN WAKEFIELD BAILEY:

        • Berryman Wakefield Bailey also known as Wake, was the fourth son and middle brother. He may have been named Berryman after an uncle, Berryman Compton, who married Quintilla's sister, Eliza Jane Hambrick.
        • He joined his brothers in the Confederate Army and had an unfortunate military career spending most of his time as a prisoner of war.  He was first captured at Fort Donelson on February 16, 1862 and later became ill and was admitted to the hospital from April 17, to May 7, 1862.  Later, after being paroled, he was again captured at Raymond, Mississippi  on May 17, 1863.  He was finally released April 11, 1864.
        • It appears Wake may have been the first of his siblings to leave Giles County shortly before 1870, marrying a woman named Mary in Decatur County and settling there for a few years before returning. He  later left Lynnville with his brother Willis in 1878, to make the journey to Texas.  He died in Paris, Texas a week before Christmas, 1884.

        x. AMANDA J. BAILEY, b. 1868, Lawrence County, Tennessee; m. Robert Wagner.

        19. xi. JULIUS MACFADDEN BAILEY, b. August 23, 1871, Lawrence County, Tennessee; d. July 12, 1962, Ardmore, Oklahoma.

3. JOHN RICHARD2 BAILEY (RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1813 in Lynnville, Tennessee, and died December 1849 in Cagelsville, Arkansas or Lynnville, Tennessee? He married WINNIFRED WILCOXSON Abt. 1842 in Maury Co. Tennessee. She was born 1820, and died Bef. 1868 in Pope County, Arkansas.

Notes for JOHN RICHARD BAILEY:

  • Most of this research comes from my notes from Robert Craig.  According to Bailey researcher, the late Robert Bailey Craig, the Bailey's migrated to Jefferson Co. Tennessee by 1800 (I'm not sure where he found that information? D. H.) and to Giles County by 1812.

According to Craig, his ancestor John Richard Bailey married Winnifred Wilcoxson, great -great granddaughter of Daniel Boone's sister Sarah (Boone) Wilcoxson, about 1842.  Late in the year 1850, he joined his younger brother Anderson Bailey in Pope County, Arkansas. Anderson had arrived in Pope County about 1847.  According to Craig, "John Richard Bailey became ill on his way to Arkansas. On his arrival wrote home to his wife that he did not expect to live but that he had been befriended and treated by a Dr. McFadden. He instructed his wife to name their baby that he had never seen after this good doctor. His wife received this letter along with another from the doctor informing her that her husband had died in December of typhus fever. The new baby was then three months old and had already been named after his father. Winnie followed her husband's wish and added the third name and the boy was from then on known as "Mack Bailey"..."

  • In Craig's research, he believed John Richard died in December of 1850, probably because he was told Mack Bailey was born in 1850. But census records reveal Mac Bailey was born in 1849 and almost a year old when the census was taken in 1850.
So I believe there is some discrepancy as to whether John Richard Bailey actually died in 1849 or 1850, although he is listed on the 1850 Giles County census.

  •  He is listed in the 1850 Tennessee Mortality schedule as dying of typhus in December.  According to the 1850 Mortality census, persons included in the Mortality Schedule were intended to be "every person who died during the year ending 1st June, 1850, whose usual place of abode at the time of death was in this family."

Strangely enough, he is also listed in the 1850 Arkansas Mortality Schedule. "John Bailey, 37 year old married male, born in Tennessee, died in December of Typhus fever after 36 days, died in Pope County, Arkansas."  So he was listed in both the Arkansas and Tennessee's mortality Schedule of 1850.

According to the 1850 census of Giles County taken on September 30th, John Bailey and family are listed as family #6 on that 1850 census next to brother William Bailey. But then two days later on October 2nd, Winifred Bailey and the children are again listed alone as family #45 next to the Boatright family. Winifred Bailey, listed twice by the same enumerator, was four years younger and baby John is listed as John R. M. Bailey. D. H.)
    (1850 Census)

The following two records support John Richard Bailey died December of 1849.  The John B. Compton mentioned is John Basil Compton, husband of Mary Hambrick.  Mary Hambrick was the sister of Quintilla Hambrick Bailey.  The date, March 4th, is also the same day Winny Bailey was allotted one years support.

  • John Bailey, a citizen of Giles County, hath departed this life, intestate and John B. Compton applied for Letters of Administration upon the Estate, Mar. 4, 1850

  • John B. Compton, Administrator of the estate of John Bailey, deceased, returned an Inventory and Account of sales of the estate. Mon. May 6, 1850.

Notes for WINNIFRED WILCOXSON:

  • Contrary to earlier research, it appears Winifred Wilcoxson was not a sister of Isaac and David Wilcoxson as once believed. She might have been a cousin if she was indeed a Wilcoxson at all. Some researchers have tied her in with a folkloric, yet questionable Stubblefield family adoption.
  • She was the mother of seven children from two Bailey brothers.
  • Giles County Court minutes - Mar. 4, 1850 pg. 162

Andrew J. Hickman, Reuben T. Emerson and William R. Grigsby appointed commissioners to allot Winefred Bailey, widow of John Bailey, deceased, one years support for her and family.

Children of JOHN BAILEY and WINNIFRED WILCOXSON are:

        i. AMERICA P.3 BAILEY, b. Abt. 1843.

        20. ii. WILLIAM ANDERSON BAILEY, b. Abt. 1845, Lynnville, Tennessee.

        21. iii. HENRY A. BAILEY, b. 1846, Giles County, Tennessee; d. May 17, 1916, Pope County, Arkansas.

        22. iv. JOHN RICHARD MCFADDEN BAILEY, b. September 14, 1849, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. September 04, 1929, Hon, Arkansas.

4. ANDERSON2 BAILEY (RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1815 in Lynnville, Tennessee, and died February 1870 in Pope County, Arkansas. He married (1) ERMA DOWDY February 04, 1836 in Maury Co, Tennessee. He married (2) WINNIFRED WILCOXSON April 13, 1853. She was born 1820, and died Bef. 1868 in Pope County, Arkansas. He married (3) ARKSHAW FORD October 22, 1868 in Pope County, Arkansas. She was born Abt. 1823.

Notes for ANDERSON BAILEY:

  • Anderson Bailey also went by the name Andrew, or possibly his full name might have been Andrew Anderson or vice versa. Is it possible this Anderson Bailey may have been named after Andrew Anderson, the witness of his parents marriage? The name Anderson was also passed down on both the Bailey and Melton lines.
  • It appears Anderson may have been adventurous and also possibly a charismatic individual. He was married three times and it appears he may have influenced some of the family members to move to Arkansas beginning a slow Bailey family migration from Tennessee to Pope County, Arkansas.
  • Anderson may have first traveled to Arkansas with other Giles County citizens including neighbor A. J. Hickman, but probably didn't stay his first time. Records indicate Anderson probably went to Pope County to live around 1845. He is located on the 1847 Pope county tax list and his wife may have died shortly after giving birth about that same year.
  • According to lore, widowed Winifred Bailey went to Pope County after John Richard died and later married Anderson in 1853.  Both families were raised in the same household, so these cousins were also step siblings.

  • - Andrew Bayley to Winfred Bayley, 13 Apr 1853, by J. L. Linton, J. P.

"Fifty years ago in Pope" written on December 31, 1908 by M. H. VanZandt of Cove, AR.

"This being Christmas Eve night, my mind runs back half a century of more to my childhood and boyhood days, when Pope county was a little more than a wilderness.

We landed in Pope County in the fall of 1847 and settled in the Boiling Springs community in the northern part of the county. The people who lived in that community at that time were Ed Campbell, Clark Epperson, whose father lived on what is now known as the Houston Birch place, the Widow Ridge, Widow Sullivan, Widow McCloud, Jim McCracken, Nathan Rowland, George Rowland and Jim Gilihand, who married old uncle John Rowland's widow. They left that county when I was small and I have never heard of them since. She had a son by her first husband whose name was Polk Rowland, who was my age". Besides those I have named were Ben Rose, John Cordel, Green Cordell,, Copeland, Sam Maloney, ANDERSON BAILEY, old Stitha Linton, Jim Sinclair, Chesty Turnbow, Joe Turnbow, John Gray, Helms, Pennington, Bill McCowen and his father, Bill Johnson, Jim Bruton, Ira Brown and the others. A good many of these people left that county directly after we moved in there. There was "Governor Hades", as we called him, who lived on the place now owned by D. M. Griffin. There was also Lee Langford, Ben Langford, Adam Ross, Allen Price, which includes about all the in that neighborhood at that time."

Notes for WINNIFRED WILCOXSON:

Children of ANDERSON BAILEY and ERMA DOWDY are:

        23. i. WILLIAM A.3 BAILEY, b. January 1837, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. Happy Bend, Conway County, Arkansas.

ii. RICHARD Z. BAILEY, b. Abt. 1839, Lynnville, Tennessee; m. NANCY C. WILSON, February 13, 1859, Pope County, Arkansas.

        Notes for NANCY C. WILSON:

        Pope County, Marriage Book C pg. 155 - Richard Z. Baley, age 20, to Nancy C. Wilson, age 15, 13 Feb 1859 by Edwd. T. Green, J. P.

Children of ANDERSON BAILEY and WINNIFRED WILCOXSON are:

        26. vi. JAMES T.3 BAILEY, b. August 1853, Caglesville, Arkansas; d. October 1901, Scottsville, Arkansas.

        27. vii. FRANCES EDA BAILEY, b. March 1855, Cagelsville, Arkansas; d. 1934, Pope County, Arkansas.

        28. viii. ANDREW LEMOYNE BAILEY, b. February 06, 1857, Cagelsville, Arkansas; d. May 09, 1916, Hector, Arkansas.

5. MASTIN G.2 BAILEY (RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1817 in Giles County, Tennessee, and died Aft. 1880. He married HANNAH Abt. 1838. She was born Abt. 1820 in Tennessee, and died Bet. 1857 - 1860 in Tennessee.

Notes for MASTIN G. BAILEY:

  • Maston or Mastin G. Bailey probably lived in Lynnville his entire life and was a widower there with nine children at about the age of forty. He took in and looked after his father's widow, Lockey, in the later years of her life and it appears he was much closer to the Foster family than his siblings.
  • The 1880 census is the last record of Mastin Bailey. According to that census, he is "confined to bed" and living in the Giles County Asylum for the Poor. It's presumed he may have died shortly after although there doesn't appear to be any record of his death.
  • There are several court cases involving Mastin from the Giles County court records.  And at least one involves business dealings with his partner, Thomas W. R. Cannon, who died before their case went to court in 1860.  A few of the others include:
    File Box G - 3 CASE 1613 1859

Amos Grigsby and others vs. Henry Gibson, John Wright and others

Amos Grigsby, Mastin Bailey, and Samuel Yokely of Giles County vs. Henry Gibson, Ursela Lovell, Jane Waldrop and husband Mastin Waldrop, Bishop Hounshell, Sallie Thurman and husband William, Lavenia and husband John of Jasper Hickman all citizens if Giles Co. TN., John Wright also of Giles County, Betsy Steward and husband William, John G. Gibson and Franklin R. Gibson of Maury County, TN.. William and James Gibson citizens of Kentucky, Jane and her husband Mastin Foster of Missouri, David Hounshell of Mississippi, William B. and Martha Gibson of Tishimingo County, Mississippi, Ann Draper and her husband William and Frances Wilcoxen and her husband Samuel citizens of Texas.

In the year 1858 and 1859 Amos Grigsby, Samuel Yokely and Mastin Bailey recovered a Judgement against Henry Gibson. John Wright testified he originally bought the land on which Henry Gibson resided as an occupant claim. Ursela Lovell, Jane Foster, William Gibson, Henry Gibson, James Gibson, Frances Wilcoxen, Sallie Thurman, Betsy Steward, Lavinia Hickman, are the children of John Hickman, deceased, and David Hounshell, Ann Draper, Jane Waldrop, Bishop Hounshell, William B. and Martha Ann Gibson, John G. and Franklin Gibson are the grand children of John Gibson, deceased, who died intestate, in Giles County about 1859. (many pages to the case dating back to the 1830's.)

W.R. Grigsby, Adm. vs. Mastin Bailey and others

Complainant W. R. Grigsby adm. for the estate of the late Amos Grigsby said Mastin Bailey was indebted to estate for $175.00. (most of case missing)

  • (W. R. Grigsby was a son of Amos Grigsby, a fairly wealthy farmer and long time neighbor of Richard Bailey. Amos Grigsby's son, W. R. also called William R. or Willis Grigsby is also shown in earlier court records to have helped Winifred Bailey, in her time of need shortly after John died. And then later this same William Grigsby has taken Mastin Bailey to court in a suit from 1867, suing Mastin for $175 on behalf of his late father’s estate. D. H.)

(Also worth noting, this same William R. Grigsby was married to Katherine Bailey in Maury County in 1836. D. H.)

  • File Box B - 14 CASE 2642 1872

    M. G. Bailey and others vs. William Bailey and others

Richard Bailey died leaving eleven children to wit: Mastin Bailey, Nancy Wilcoxson, Anderson Bailey, John Bailey, William Bailey, Martha Wilcoxson, Eliz. Blair, Sally Overstreet, Elijah Bailey, Mary M. Gorgis and Manerva J. Bailey, deed included Elijah Bailey to William dated 1851, land waters on Lynn Creek. Richard Baileys wife name was Lackey Bailey. Mastin Bailey resided on Dower tract of widow Lackey Bailey. Mary M. married Jesse Gorgis, Nancy married David Wilcoxson, Sarah married William Overstreet and Eliza married ____Blair.

  • (Mastin has been listed in various records as M. G. , M. D. and M J. Bailey.  It appears Mastin's middle name was presumed to begin with a "G", although one Bailey researcher conveys her family folklore reported his name was Mastin Raymond Bailey. I haven't found any records to support her claim. D. H.)

Notes for HANNAH:

  • Hannah is the only Richard Bailey in-law whose surname has yet to be determined.

Children of MASTIN BAILEY and HANNA are:

        29. i. SARAH ELIZABETH3 BAILEY, b. Abt. 1839.

        30. ii. SOPHRONIA C. BAILEY, b. February 4, 1841, Lynnville, Tennessee; d. February 1, 1917, Weakley County, Tennessee.

        31. iii. MARY JANE BAILEY, b. May 1844, Giles County, Tennessee; d. 1923?, Gibson County, Tennessee; m. JAMES W. C. SCOTT; b. November 1844, Tennessee; d. February 24,1915, Gibson County, Tennessee.

        32. iv. JAMES KNOX POLK BAILEY, b. Abt. 1845, Giles County, Tennessee.

        v. ERWIN T. BAILEY, b. Abt. 1847.

        Notes for ERWIN T. BAILEY:

It is not known what happen to Erwin T. Bailey, unless he is the Ervin T. Bailey (b. 1852 TN.) listed living in Hampton, Lee County, Arkansas in 1880.

vi. MARGARETTE PEGGY ANN BAILEY, b. Abt. 1849.

        33. vii. JOHN M. BAILEY, b. January 1854; d. June 21, 1935, Culleoka, Maury County, Tennessee.

        viii. JOSEPH N. BAILEY, b. Abt. 1855.

ix. ISABELLA BAILEY, b. Abt. 1857.

6. ELIZABETH "BETSY"2 BAILEY (RICHARD1) was born March 15, 1819 in Giles County, Tennessee, and died January 23, 1893 in Westpoint, Tennessee. She married DAVID BLAIR Abt. 1839 in Giles County, Tennessee. He was born Abt. 1814 in Tennessee, and died Aft. 1880.

Notes for ELIZABETH "BETSY" BAILEY:

  • (There is some conflicting research regarding Elizabeth's life and death. Some L. D. S. family records list Elizabeth as being born on Mar. 15, 1810, which I believe to be wrong and should be considered less than accurate as these same records show David Blair as being born in 1823 and their marriage in 1832, when David would have been nine years old. Other L. D. S. records have her being born on Mar. 15, 1819, which is less questionable and closer to the year of birth she gives on later census records.
  • Many researchers believe she died in West Point, Tennessee but Blair researcher, Betty Morrow believes she and David are buried in unmarked graves at Rike Cemetery near Farmersville in Collin County, Texas. D. H.)

Children of ELIZABETH BAILEY and DAVID BLAIR are:

        i. WILLIAM H. B.3 BLAIR, b. Abt. 1851.

ii. SARAH MELISSA TENNESSEE BLAIR, b. June 28, 1852; d. July 01, 1907, Collin County, Texas; m. THOMAS ALEXANDER MORROW, April 06, 1868, Maury County, Tennessee.

        iii. MARY HORTENCE ADELLA BLAIR, b. March 22, 1857; d. January 04, 1940; m. GEORGE WASHINGTON LOVELL, Aft. 1880.

iv. MARY ARBELLA "BELLE" BLAIR, b. Abt. 1862.

7. MARTHA "PATSY" ANN2 BAILEY (RICHARD1) was born December 05, 1820 in Lynnville, Tennessee, and died October 16, 1877 in Farmersville, Texas. She married ISAAC AARON WILCOXSON October 24, 1837 in Maury County, Tennessee, son of DAVID WILCOXSON and SABRA CUTBIRTH. He was born February 25, 1816 in Maury County, Tennessee, and died February 01, 1864 in Farmersville, Texas.

Notes for MARTHA "PATSY" ANN BAILEY:

  • She is incorrectly listed as Patsy "Estes" by several genealogist on the Internet.  The following research proves she was a descendant of Richard Bailey and Maury County marriage records also prove she was married (at age 16) to Isaac Wilcoxson.

He was born October 13, 1817 in Giles County, Tennessee, and died April 16, 1894 in Cagelsville, Arkansas.

Notes for MARY MARGARET WALLACE BAILEY:

  • One account says she was buried in an unmarked grave at Old Baptist Cemetery in Hector, Arkansas.

"Richard Bailey was my great-great grandfather. He was born in North Carolina in 1790 and he was Cherokee. I don't know the degree. His daughter, my great-grandmother, was Mary Margaret Wallace Bailey Garrigus, b. 1832 in Giles, Co., Tn., her tenth son, my grandfather, was born in 1874 in Pope Co.,Ark. His name was Sereno Hubastus "Jake" Garrigus. He died in 1973 and he told me of this connection. Because of his advanced age I believe he knew the history of his grandfather correctly. I would like to know the father of Richard Bailey and any information that is available on the Bailey family."  Carolyn Garrigus Becton -- Route 1 Box 22 , Silas , AL 36919

More About MARY MARGARET WALLACE BAILEY:

  • According to researcher Carolyn Becton and her family folklore, Mary was almost six feet tall, blonde, and had a long face.   When she died in 1881, the two daughters tried to raise the family but were unsuccessful so they were all sent to boarding school.  Their "spinster aunt Minerva Jane" came to raise them but after allegedly running through all the money, she was eventually sent packing back to Tennessee.
  • Mary died of a cancer on her back but it is unclear if she had a melanoma, or lung cancer or breast cancer that had spread.
  • Burial: Old Hickory Springs Cemetery, Hector, Arkansas

Notes for JESSE ERWIN GARRIGUS:

  • April 19, 1894 - Uncle Jesse Garrigus, of the Cagelsville neighborhood, is no more. While on a shopping trip he became ill, was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. J. Johnson where he was dead within two hours with hart (heart) disease.
The deceased was one of the oldest citizens of the county, being at the time of his death about 77 years of age. His remains were interred at Cagelsville on Tuesday in the presence of many sorrowing friends.

Notes for ELIZABETH JANE BAILEY:

  • According to 1860 census records, Elizabeth Jane Bailey and her husband, Robert Tacker took in her father and several Bailey siblings for a while.
  • She was a widow and lived next to Elijah and sister Martha Bailey Carter in 1880 Madison County, Tennessee.

BOAZ December 01, 1855 in Maury County, Tennessee, daughter of THOMAS BOAZ and MARY PULLEN. She was born 1833 in Maury County, Tennessee, and died 1860 in Giles County, Tennessee. He married (2) SARAH R. JACKSON August 19, 1861 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. She was born January 20, 1834 in Tennessee, and died March 29, 1907 in Sentinel, Oklahoma.

Notes for PARTHENIA C. BOAZ:

  • According to the Dawes roll, when asked what year Parthenia died Willis Anderson Bailey replied, " '60". She is not on the 1860 census so she probably died the first half of that year.
  • Some of Parthenia's ancestors (Boaz, Pullen, and Richardson's) are listed in an article called "The History of Stiversville" written by James Barrow Brown Jr.

Child of WILLIS BAILEY and PARTHENIA BOAZ is:

        41. i. WILLIAM THOMAS4 BAILEY, b. October 18, 1856, Lynnville, Giles County, Tennessee; d. March 02, 1937, Paris, Lamar County, Texas.

Children of WILLIS BAILEY and SARAH JACKSON are:

13. JOHN MARTIN3 BAILEY (WILLIAM A.2, RICHARD1) was born March 1836 in Lynnville, Tennessee, and died between 1863 - 1873. He married MARY H. CANNON HEWITT Abt. 1857, daughter of RICHARD HEWITT and WINNY CANNON. She was born Abt. 1839 in Tennessee.

Notes for JOHN MARTIN BAILEY:

  • John Martin was one of four Bailey brothers who served in the 3rd Tennessee Infantry, Company I. His younger brothers Thomas, Berryman, and James served with him.  All of the boys except for John Martin enlisted for twelve months.  John Martin enlisted for three years. His military record shows that sometime between the January and July muster rolls in 1863, he was absent without leave. Other records show he deserted from Enterprise, Mississippi on August 6, 1863.
  • There are no clear records to indicate what happened to John Martin Bailey.  He had only two daughter's, both born before the War, so it's probably safe to assume he died sometime during or shortly after the War.  It has been documented and recorded he preceded his grandfather's (John Hambrick) death in 1873.  And his wife (widow?), Mary Hewatt had married a Jonas C. Scott on September 27, 1865.
  • The Scott's lived in 1870 Giles County, Tennessee, but by 1880 had moved with the Thomas Bailey's, Hewatt's, and several other Giles County families northwest into in Gibson and Obion County County, Tennessee.
  • According to the research descendant genealogist Carolyn Estes, John M. Bailey died in 1869 and was born  on March 21, 1836, in Anderson County, Tennessee and she list him as a son of a Sib Bailey? (The month and year of John Martin Bailey's birth listed coincide with my research, so I believe it's possible this is our John M. Bailey.  But I believe the birthplace and father she had listed in her research are questionable. D. H.)
  • From the Giles County, Tennessee Website: (abstracted from an article regarding the Tennessee Third Infantry)

The 3rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment was organized under a sugar maple tree at Lynnville Station in Giles County, Tennessee, on May 16, 1861. The regiment was composed of 10 companies of picked men. Company I comprised Captain William Peaton's men from Campbellsville, Giles County.

The 3rd Tennessee Infantry went by rail to Nashville on May 16 and camped for the night at the fairgrounds. The next day the went to the State Capitol and drew their weapons, percussion muskets. They moved by rail that day to Camp Cheatham, near Springfield, Tennessee. They remained at Camp Cheatham for several weeks, receiving instruction in military tactics, drilling and marksmanship, all under the leadership of Colonel John C. Brown. While at Camp Cheatham, the 3rd Tennessee Infantry suffered much sickness, especially measles. On July 28, 1861, the 3rd Tennessee Infantry moved to Camp Trousdale in Robertson County, Tennessee, on the L&N Railroad near the Kentucky line. A report dated July 31, 1861, indicated 885 men present. While undergoing further military instruction, the 3rd Tennessee Infantry suffered much illness, particularly diarrhea and measles. Tennessee seceded from the Union on June 8, 1861, and the 3rd Tennessee Infantry was accepted into the service of the Confederate States of America on August 7, 1861. The 3rd Tennessee Infantry was reorganized:

From Camp Trousdale, the 3rd Tennessee Infantry moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where they reported to General Simon B. Buckner on September 19, 1861. Colonel John C. Brown was senior Colonel and was given command of a brigade composed of the 3rd, 18th, 23rd and 24th Regiments of Tennessee Infantry, Jones' Battalion of Tennessee Cavalry, and Porter's Tennessee Battery. Here they suffered much sickness and endured hard drill under the direction of Colonel Brown. "The drill was very exacting and fatiguing, and in the process of hardening for service the numbers were reduced by sickness, permanent disability, and death."

"Colonel John C. Brown was a strict disciplinarian, full of the magnitude of the work ahead, and determined that his regiment, composed of picked material, should not be excelled." Brown's Brigade remained in and around Bowling Green until the following February.

They arrived at Fort Donelson on February 8, 1862 and soon suffered 73 casualties there. The next week on the 16th they surrendered to the Federals and were sent to prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois.  The remaining surviving prisoners were paroled and exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi on Sept. 23, 1862. ...

        ii. MARTHA ANN BAILEY, b. December 14, 1861; d. Aft. 1880.

        Notes for MARTHA ANN BAILEY:

Martha is found on the 1880 Obion County, Tennessee census living in the household of her uncle Dr. R. A. Hewitt. No other records on her are found.

14. THOMAS BENTON3 BAILEY (WILLIAM A.2, RICHARD1) was born October 22, 1838 in Lynnville, Tennessee, and died December 25, 1905 in Kenton, Tennessee. He married SOPHRONIA C. BAILEY July 25, 1858 in Giles County, Tennessee, daughter of MASTON BAILEY and HANNA. She was born February 4, 1841 in Lynnville, Tennessee, and died February 1, 1917 in Greenfield, Weakley County, Tennessee.

Notes for THOMAS BENTON BAILEY:

  • Thomas Benton Bailey married his first cousin Sophrona C. Bailey in 1858. Sophrona was a daughter of Mastin G. Bailey. Their first daughter, Mary Thomas Bailey was a twin but her sibling died the day after being born. They wouldn't have any more children until Thomas returned home from the Civil War.

Thomas also served with the Third Tennessee Infantry, Company B, during the Civil War.  He was constantly sick during the early part of the war and was "sick in quarters" during the Battle of Fort Donelson when he and most of his unit was captured.  He and his fellow soldiers were released at Vicksburg in September and forced to reorganize.  On April 20, 1863 he was sent to the hospital in Land Springs, Mississippi.  And he later deserted in September of that year.

Military and pension records indicate he was hospitalized for a chronic none battlefield injury.  He "ruptured" his right side while doing hard labor, building breastworks.  He reported many years later in pension records that his Civil War injury plagued him the rest of his life.

Thomas probably left Giles County in 1878 with the Hewitt's and some other families to Northwestern Tennessee to the counties of Obion and Gibson.  Thomas lived close to the border of those two counties at Mason Hall - Kenton in Obion County but later moved outside Kenton, Tennessee.

He and Sophrona had two boys and four girls.  Sadly, almost all of his children died at a relatively young age.  He outlived all of his children except for one daughter and one granddaughter.  He died on Christmas Day in 1905.

  • From Thomas Benton Bailey descendant and researcher, Ann Tipton McLeese:
"I have sketchy info from my grandmother's bible that says her grandfather was Thomas Benton Bailey who was born in Jiles Co., TN. He was a Civil War veteran. He married a Cherokee Indian woman named Safrona. Their oldest daughter was Mary Thomas Bailey.

  • Notes in my grandmother's bible state that her grandparents were Thomas Benton Bailey and Saprona Bailey (Cherokee Indian). They state that Thomas and Saprona were born in Giles Co. Their oldest child, Mary Thomas Bailey (my GGM) was married in 1882. I don't know any other dates for this line of my family tree."

        iv. WILLIAM RICHARD BAILEY, b. 1868; d. 1880.

        Notes for WILLIAM RICHARD BAILEY:

        • He's not listed living in Thomas Bailey's household in 1880 and was probably deceased.  But it is possible William Richard is the Richard Baily (b. 1868) who is found on the 1880 Gibson Co. Tennessee listed as a servant and living in the household of W. F. Arnold in Eaton, TN.?

        v. FANNIE M. BAILEY, b. 1871; d. bef. 1905

        Notes for JASPER KELSEY BAILEY:

        • There is some debate to whether this is the same Jasper Kelsey Bailey, who according to census records was born in either November or December of 1879. There is reportedly a Jasper Kelsey Bailey who was born May 16, 1887 in Lynnville and died April 8, 1941 in Montgomery County.  Unfortunately neither Jasper Kelsey Bailey are listed in the Texas death records.
        • Was he named after local physician, Dr. Jasper Kelsey? It appears for many people in Lynnville, Jasper Kelsey was the family doctor. Jasper also happened to be the son-in-law of Eliza Hambrick Compton, Quintilla Hambrick Bailey's sister.

More About ELIHU L. HINDMAN:

  • Next door neighbors of Mastin Bailey on 1860 census.

Elihu applied for a military service pension from the Civil War.  He claimed to be a member of Col. Jake Biffles - Tennessee 19th Cavalry, but was denied because he wasn't found listed on the muster rolls.  J. E. Brownlow and Dr. Jasper Kelsey were character witnesses on his application.

Elihu claimed he contracted "white swelling" of the right leg below the knee during his military service.  His physician, Dr. Jasper Kelsey, reported Elihu "had his right leg amputated above the knee joint on account tuberculosis disease of tibia, which extended from the ankle into the knee joint, his leg was amputated about March, 1873..."

Children of SARAH BAILEY and ELIHU HINDMAN are:

        i. FRANK4 HINDMAN.

30. SOPHRONIA C.3 BAILEY (MASTIN G.2, RICHARD1) was born February 4, 1841 in Lynnville, Giles County, Tennessee, and died February 1, 1917, in Greenfield, Weakley County, Tennessee. She married THOMAS BENTON BAILEY July 25, 1858 in Giles County, Tennessee, son of WILLIAM BAILEY and QUINTELLA HAMBRICK. He was born October 22, 1838 in Lynnville, Tennessee, and died December 25, 1905 in Kenton, Tennessee.

Notes for SOPHRONA C. BAILEY:

  • Sophrona's first daughter, Mary Thomas Bailey was a twin but her sibling died the day after being born. They would not have any more children until Thomas returned home from the Civil War.  She was the mother of six children who, except for one daughter all preceded her in death.  And almost all of her children died at a young age.

According to her Tennessee Civil War Confederate Widow's pension application, Sophrona C. Bailey said she married Thomas Bailey, on July 25, 1858 in Giles County by Jesse Fry, Esq.   She also noted their relationship to the pension board by stating  "we were cousins".  Sophrona was indeed a first cousin and a daughter of Mastin G. Bailey.  One of her witnesses on her pension application was brother-in-law, J. C. (James W. C.) Scott.

  • It appears Sophrona probably died alone, three days before her 76th birthday in Greenfield, Tennessee.  There were no witnesses or informant's to give any vital information on her death certificate and she was hastily buried the next day in Greenfield.
  • From Thomas Benton and Sophrona C. Bailey descendant and researcher, Ann Tipton McLeese:

"I have sketchy info from my grandmother's bible that says her grandfather was Thomas Benton Bailey who was born in Jiles Co., TN. He was a Civil War veteran. He married a Cherokee Indian woman named Safrona. Their oldest daughter was Mary Thomas Bailey.

Notes in my grandmother's bible state that her grandparents were Thomas Benton Bailey and Saprona Bailey (Cherokee Indian). They state that Thomas and Saprona were born in Giles Co. Their oldest child, Mary Thomas Bailey (my GGM) was married in 1882. I don't know any other dates for this line of my family tree."

Notes for MARY JANE BAILEY:

  • James and Mary are both buried at Liberty Grove Cemetery.
  • Although they are not brothers, it's possible her husband,  James Scott could be related to Jonas Scott, who married John Martin Bailey's widow, Mary Cannon Hewatt in 1865.
  • James and Mary Jane's youngest daughter, Etta May, married first cousin, Robert Alvin Bailey. Robert was a son of her brother, James K. Polk Bailey and Nancy Hickman.

33. JOHN M.3 BAILEY (MASTIN G.2, RICHARD1) was born January 1854 in Giles County, Tennessee and died June 21, 1935 in Culleoka, Maury County, Tennessee. He married MARY ALICE WILLIAMSON.  She was born about 1857 and died before 1898.

Notes for MARY ALICE WILLIAMSON:

  • The Williamson family were neighbors of John Bailey in 1880.  Her father, S. P. Williamson died in 1897 and Alice is listed as Mary Alice Bailey, his deceased daughter on a court case from November 1898.  She also is not listed on the 1900 census.
Their children, Luna and Susie are first listed on the 1900 Maury County census, Luna is listed as being born in March of 1883 and Susie born in February of 1887.  Luna later married Jonas Weatherford but she died at age twenty one.  Jonas Weatherford would later married Luna's sister, Susie.  Information on Luna and Susie comes primarily from the research of Bonnie Weatherford.

Notes for JOHN M. BAILEY:

  • Although researcher Bonnie Weatherford list John Bailey as being born in 1850, the true date and year of John's birth is debatable.  In 1860, he is listed as 7 years old (b. 1853), in 1880 he is listed as being 25, (b. 1855) and in 1900 he was listed as being born in January of 1854.   And finally, according to his death certificate he was born March 6, 1860.  The questionably erroneous information on his death certificate was provided by his son-in-law, J. F. Weatherford.
  • Although Bonnie Weatherford list John's death date as June 25, 1935, death certificate records indicate John M. Bailey died of Cardial Decomposition on June 21, 1935.  The certificate also indicates he was not a widower and married to Alice Bailey.  His father was listed as Mastin Bailey and his mother unknown.

Children of JOHN BAILEY and ALICE WILLIAMSON are:

i. HANNA ELIZABETH4 BAILEY, b. 1879; m. WILEY WILKES

     File Box H-18 Case 3931 1887

Willis P. Hambrick & als vs. Willis A. Bailey & als

John Hambrick Died January 15, 1873, intestate, leaving three children, to wit: Willis P., Rosannah Richardson, Eliza Compton. Rosannah Hambrick married Carroll and Eliza Hambrick married Berryman C. Compton. Eliza Compton died and left the following grand children: Thomas B. Bailey, B. W. Bailey, William S. Bailey, James E. Bailey, Elizabeth Tacker, Martha Carter, Willis Bailey were the children of Quintella Bailey, a deceased daughter who died before her father B.C. Compton. Sarah Tidwell, Smith Compton and Eliza Prior were the children of Mary Compton, daughter of intestate John Hambrick, also left surviving two great grand children CORNELIUS and Martha Bailey, children of grandson John M. Bailey who died before his grandfather. Willis A. Bailey who was a resident of Texas, was appointed Administrator of estate. W. E. Boatright, Robert Caruthers and James S. Perry were his securities. John Hambrick lived in the 15th District of Giles County on the waters of Lynn Creek North of Old Lynnville (Waco) on the turnpike. Eliza Jane Compton lived on her fathers property. CORNELIUS BAILEY married C.C. ALEXANDER. They appointed J. T. Lovell their Power of Attorney to collect money due them from the estate. W. E. Boatright resigned as security and James S. and William Perry became securities. Willis P. Hambrick resided in Missouri, Carroll Richardson and wife Rosannah were residents of Texas. They were married in 1835 and had resided in Texas since 1847.

  • The preceding case is very confusing and misleading.  It has probably been re-recorded wrong but this vague record usually leads most people into believing Eliza Compton was the grandmother of the Bailey children and that Quintella Bailey was the daughter of Berryman C. Compton, when in fact she was a daughter of John Hambrick.

  • The following information and research on the children of Cornelia and Charles Alexander are from the gedcom of Carolyn Estes. Estes writes, "On her (Cornelia Bailey Alexander) Tomb Stone is written: Remember children as you pass by, as you go are now so once was I, As I am now so must you be, Prepare for death and follow me".
