Some call them soldiers. Some call them rangers, partisans, scouts, and irregulars. Some call them bushwhackers, guerillas, criminals. They fought for the Blue and the Gray, and sometimes for themselves. But they are an inextricable part of Tennessee's Civil War heritage. You can't understand the Volunteer State during that epic struggle without understanding the role of these independent units and marauders. With names like Tinker Dave Beatty, Champ Ferguson, Pomp Kersey, Doc Mangum, they roamed the Tennessee landscape, sometimes with the armies, sometimes as independent units. They scavenged, foraged, raided, and fought a strange kind of guerilla war in the backwaters of the War Between the States. These pages will be under constant construction so that it include all possible aspects of the guerilla warfare that dominated much of Tennessee during the war years. Besides mini-bios of unit leaders, we hope to provide rosters, articles, and other information. Check back with us.
