- To sum up, our central finding is that regulated firms should not
necessarily target regulatory agencies in their political strategies when
they are seeking more favorable agency decisions. In the right circumstances
firms gain greater leverage by instead targeting elected political
institutions which can put pressure on the agency to comply. By specifying
these conditions we contribute to the existing political strategy literature
which has hitherto assumed regulated firms should concentrate solely on
their interactions with regulators. We leave theoretical enhancement and
empirical assessment of our framework for future work.

To Have A Lawmaker’s Ear

In December, the
Democrat-controlled Senate passed another subsidy-bloated farm bill that
continues to benefit wealthy farms with unlimited payments while ignoring
the real needs of small American farms as well as farmers in developing
nations. Soon President Bush will have the opportunity to fulfill his
promise to veto this bill and end the policy of sending payoffs to some of
the wealthiest landowners in America. The importance of this legislation,
and the genuine reform that is needed, cannot be overstressed, as its
effects will be felt by many, including American farmers, African farmers,
American taxpayers and consumers.
Oligopolies: A silent takeover
-
Over the past twenty years, there has been an unprecedented
series of mergers and acquisitions across the world in almost every industry
imaginable. For the most part, these deals are part of an attempt to
dominate a specific market. But instead of creating monopolies, which are
subject to antitrust action (Microsoft, for example), the preferred strategy
is an oligopoly, a situation in which a small number of companies divide up
the market between them.
