Well, it's Saturday and time to take another marble out of the jar. Also, I
guess I owe you a brief report on the military "family" reunion Leavon and I
attended last week in Williamsburg, VA.
We had about 70 folks attending the 4-day reunion and from all I saw and heard
everyone had a GREAT time. We hugged, we kissed, we reminisced, we laughed,
we cried.... all those things family members do each and every time they
gather together after not seeing each other for a long time.
We toured Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg. We held a worship and
memorial service Sunday morning. We said a prayer for those affected by the
events of September 11th, we remembered those from amongst our own ranks who
have "gone on ahead" to serve as "Palace Guards on High" and we offered up a
special prayer on behalf of one of our own, Vernon Adkins, who could not be
with us due his severe illness with cancer. Little did we know that our
"brother" Vernon had died a couple of days earlier.
I had been informed before we departed for the reunion that Vernon may only
have a few days to live, but when I called his daughter from the reunion to
find out the latest on his condition, I was unable to reach her.
She had, however, earlier given me the best news I could have ever received
out of such a dire situation. She wrote, "He accepted the Lord a couple of
days ago". With the assurance of Vernon's salvation, we now know that we
shall see him at the "big" reunion one day.
The Bible says in Romans 10:9, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the
Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from
the dead, thou shalt be saved." It didn't say to do this at age 13, 33 or
83.... it just said to do it. Vernon took his last marble out of the jar
last week at age 60 plus. Better late than never, Vern, and may your soul
rest in everlasting Peace. Hope to see you at the "majestic" reunion.
Blessings!!
Don
