Gig Harbor Golf Club

Year 2005 Election / Candidate Information

Todd Drumm

I have been a member of GHG&CC for a little over a year and have lived on Fox Island for 7 years. I took up golf in earnest 4 years ago after a nearly fatal accident permanently maimed my left leg. Actually a blessing in disguise, as my 3 little girls and I are now addicted to golf. I even built a 108 yard par 3 in my back yard, complete with creeping fescue rough, well aerated fairway and 2 British style pot bunkers.

I consider the course one of the most well maintained and pleasant courses in Washington. With its rock hard, small sloping greens and narrow fairways it is the best practice facility in the Northwest and easily the best golf value around. It is also a very family friendly and safe course, unlike nearby clubs with parallel fairways and lunatic players where you take your life in your hands dodging errant T shots. In retrospect I can’t believe I kibitzed around over joining for so long, and find it hard to believe we are always scrapping to find new members. A club this good, should have a waiting list. I belong to the Fox Island Yacht club, which for over a decade has had a waiting list and thus a significant operating cash surplus year after year.

I believe that a full, stable, yet limited membership roster (Selfishly, I like many others, enjoy the fact that one can literally walk on to the course and never have to wait more than 20 minutes for a Tee time and I wish to keep it that way.) is the most important order of business. I think targeting younger members who have more money and less time to play golf, but appreciated the convenience of almost walk on T times would be willing to join if we get our club in their view. Furthermore, target parents who are trapped in the “extra circular activities” nightmare. They spend small fortunes and countless hours schlepping back and forth in carpools on, soccer, pottery, ballet, baseball, riding lessons........  Our club offers real value and convenience in comparison.

Full membership rolls, with a waiting list, facilitates rational long range planning of improvements and capital expenditures. It also allows the club to maintain quality staff that would otherwise be constantly looking for the next step in their career; elsewhere.

If elected a trustee I will, at minimal or no expense, seek to implement improvements that make our Club more marketable to a wider range of golfers. For instance; upgrading our range. The cost of range balls at other facilities, which only have mats; no putting green nor bunker / approach green, would run roughly $800 / year, if you only hit 2 buckets of balls a week. Our range program is a great value and should be advertised as such to attract more members. I suggest organizing several different “all volunteer forces”; work parties that could make and maintain improvements to the club. For instance; making two more target greens with bunkers at 130 and 155 yards and then keep the bunkers weed free. Also directly in front of the grass Tee areas, build two fairway bunkers, so when the range is not too busy, players can step forward a few paces and practice their fairway bunker game.

My experience in Finance and construction, including high rise commercial, residential and recreational tennis court and swimming pool construction could come in handy.  I also ran a college bar for 2 years, but I promise to stay out of that end of the club. I also have the time to devote to the club, as even in the dead of winter, I am at the club 4 to 7 days a week playing with Christie and Alisha.

Warm regards, Todd Drumm

Joe Austin

Greetings:

My name is Joe Austin and I am running for an open board seat.  I was appointed to an open seat late last year.  I have been a member of the club for about 18 months.  My family is now also involved in activities at the club and we have enjoyed our short tenure.

I would like to continue to help with the future direction and success of Gig Harbor Golf Club. During my travels, I have been a member of five clubs in the past including a nine hole course in Texas.  I have been a member of a public course in Kansas City and a private course where the seniors play the Kansas City event.  This has given me exposure to an array of issues that all courses face in day-to-day operations.

I have experience in running a multi-million dollar business and I am currently responsible for Global Sales of a Cardiology company based out of Milwaukee.  I am also the VP of Business Development for my current employer and I performed acquisitions and mergers for my previous employer.  Business Development involves long-term business decisions for partnerships, acquisitions and mergers of the company.  I plan the long-term growth strategy and spending policy for the company.

I currently help on the finance and membership committee.  I have been more active on the finance committee than with the membership.  While membership is up most of this have been the efforts of the entire membership getting their friends and neighbors to join the club.  I have had success in getting a few new members but would like to be given the chance to continue in our efforts to develop the club.  I believe that I can help with the strategy, planning and execution of the plan to keep the club prosperous and growing.

Thank you for your consideration.

Joe Austin
