GIG HARBOR GOLF CLUB
2005 MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
July 1, 2005 through August 14, 2005
2004 Men’s Club Champion: Russ Mackay
2004 Net Champion: Carl Bayha
Format: 18-hole match play with bracket seedings determined by the total/aggregate score from three (3) medal play qualifying rounds. Gross 18-hole match play for the Championship Bracket Finals. For net matches, strokes fall where they lie on the scorecard. For example, if Player A with a 10 handicap is playing Player B with an 18 handicap in a match, Player B would receive eight (8) strokes from Player A in the form of one stroke on each of the top eight handicap holes as shown on the scorecard.
Eligibility: Open to all male members of Gig Harbor Golf Club 18 years of age or older. Each player must have a minimum of five (5) scores posted to date in 2005 during Men’s Club competition, such as Tournament and/or Bigsome play on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Age of 18 AND five posted score requirement must be attained by no later than June 30, 2005.
Entry Fee: $25.00 per player. Fee MUST be paid prior to teeing off in the first round of qualifying play. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Payouts: Using proceeds from the entry fees and any monies contributed by the Men’s Club, payouts will be split as follows: 35% will be paid out to the open/championship bracket, 35% will be paid out to the A net bracket, 20% will be paid out to the B net bracket, and 10% will be paid out to the C net bracket. In each bracket, four places will be paid. 50% of that bracket’s prize fund to the winner, 30% of that bracket’s prize fund to the runner up, and 10% to each of the semi-final losers in that respective bracket. As an option, the two semi-final bracket losers may agree to a consolation match on the Sunday of the Finals for the entire 20%, winner take all. Both players must agree to the extra match.
Qualifying: Each player who wishes to enter the tournament must play three (3) qualifying rounds sometime during the month of July. Last day for qualifying is Sunday, July 31, 2005. Entrants may play a qualifying round at any time during the month of July as long as there is at least one other tournament entrant present in the pairing group during the qualifying round. Entrants who have already completed their qualifying rounds may play with the person attempting to qualify as a marker. Players must declare their intent to play a qualifying round to the Pro Shop and must obtain their official qualifying scorecard PRIOR TO TEEING OFF. Again, NO EXCEPTIONS. Official, computer-generated qualifying score cards must be used to post qualifying round scores. The card must further be dated and signed by the qualifying participant and attested by at least one “marker” present during the round play. Again, NO EXCEPTIONS. Unsigned, unattested, and/or non-computer score cards will not be accepted for qualifying round scoring.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON QUALIFYING OR OTHER ISSUES, PLEASE CONTACT JEFF MACKAY OR CURT HALSAN PRIOR TO BEGINNING PLAY.
Handicaps: Since this is somewhat of a drawn-out event taking place over several weeks and several USGA handicap revisions, ALL PARTICIPANT HANDICAPS WILL BE FROZEN DURING THIS COMPETITION. Current handicaps for each participant effective June 24, 2005 (last revision date in June prior to qualifying) will be used during all competition through the finals in August.
Seedings: Once all qualifying has been completed on July 31, 2005, the Match Play brackets and seedings will be established.
CHAMPIONSHIP (GROSS) BRACKET
The seven (7) players with the lowest gross aggregate scores (total of the three qualifying rounds) and the defending Club Champion will make up the Championship Bracket. Seedings will be made based on the order of the lowest aggregate gross scores. The defending Club Champion will receive the #8 seed automatically, and does not have to qualify. However, the defending Club Champion may participate in qualifying if he wants to try and get a higher seed. His scores will determine his final seeding, but he is automatically in at no less than the #8 seed. Match pairings will follow standard bracket format, so the first round would look like this: #1 vs. #8, #2 vs. #7, #3 vs. #6 and #4 vs. #5.
A, B & C NET BRACKETS
For the net brackets, players that did not make the Championship Bracket will be seeded according to their aggregate net scores for the three qualifying rounds. The eight (8) lowest net qualifiers not included in the Championship Bracket will make up the A Net Bracket. The next 16 lowest net qualifiers not included in the Championship Bracket or the A Net Bracket will make up the B Net Bracket and the final 16 net qualifiers not included in the Championship Bracket or the A or B Net Brackets will make up the C Net Bracket. Match pairings will follow the same format as the Championship Bracket, but for 16 players. #1 vs. #16, #3 vs. #14, #5 vs. #12 and #7 vs. #10 in one half of the bracket, #2 vs. #15, #4 vs. #13, #6 vs. #11 and #8 vs. #9 in the other half of the bracket.
CONSOLATION ROUND
Any player who attempts to qualify but does not make it into a bracket, or any player who was eliminated from their respective bracket will have an opportunity to play in a one day consolation medal play round on Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 8:00 a.m. This consolation round requires an additional $5.00 entry fee per player, payable the morning of the competition prior to teeing off.
Tie-Breakers: Tie-breakers for bracket seedings will be determined by the lowest of the players’ qualifying rounds. For example, Player A had net (or gross if used in the Championship Bracket) rounds of 70-66-74 for an aggregate score of 210, and Player B had net (or gross if used in the Championship Bracket) rounds of 69-71-70, also for an aggregate score of 210. Player A would receive the higher seed due to having shot the lower score of net 66 during qualifying. If both players have the same low round, the next lowest score will be used. If needed, the third lowest score will then be used. In the unlikely event that all scores are the same, a coin toss will determine the winner. All decisions of the committee are final.
Match Play: Once the brackets have been seeded and filled, the match play competition will begin the week of August 1, 2005. Players in the B and C brackets MUST complete their first round matches by Saturday, August 6. It is up to the players involved to schedule their own matches during that time frame. Second round matches for brackets B and C must be completed between Sunday, August 7 and Friday, August 12. First round matches for the Championship and A brackets can be played anytime between August 1 and August 12, but all first round matches in these two brackets must be completed by Friday, August 12, 2005. It is up to the players to determine when those matches will be played during that time frame. Semi-Final matches for all brackets will be played on Saturday, August 13, 2005 with the competitors of each match determining the time for their matches. Finals for all brackets will be held on Sunday, August 14, 2005. The finals for the net brackets (A, B and C) will be 18-hole matches starting at 8:00 am. Championship bracket finals will tee off with the Ladies’ Club Championship finalists at 1:00 pm. Dinner and awards ceremony will take place after all the Championship matches have been completed.
Steak dinner and awards ceremony hosted by the Men’s Club will follow the final Championship Match on Sunday, August 14. The awards ceremony and dinner are open to all club members, male and female, regardless of whether or not they participated in the tournament. Cost is $5 per person, and is similar to Steak Night – bring your own steak, trimmings and condiments are provided.
We hope to make this year’s event even more successful than last year, so please encourage everyone to sign up for qualifying, or just come out and watch the competition!
Enjoy the tournament and support the Club Champions!
