The trip itself was long but relatively uneventful...relatively. Important note: when traveling overseas you should check you luggage to its final destination, NOT where you pick up the international flight. Failure to do so pretty much ensures you will make it but your luggae will not. Thank you Sarah for speaking up when we checked in at Monroe and tried to check the bags to L.A. One more disaster averted.
Our longest layover was 3 hours in L.A. then it was on the 747-400 for 15 hours to Auckland followed by another 3 to Brisbane. Space was limited but not uncomfortable. I spent a good bit of time reading some more in "Fatal Shore" (see the links page) about the establishment of Australia. It cheered me up.
We made the transit in 28 hours. It took 252 days for the first transported criminals to get from England to Botany Bay. During that time they spent most of their time chained below decks with 4 people sharing a 6x7 foot space (about the size of a king-size bed) in a space that was no more than 5 feet high. A total of 185 people...not counting the crew and guards...were crammed onto a boat that was 114 feet long and 31 feet wide. No lanterns or candles for fear of fire. I recommend the book as interesting on a whole lot of levels.
Food was pretty good, no turbulence and it was relatively easy to sleep if you wanted to.
I'm still impressed with the distances. It's 6,400 miles from L.A. to Auckland and another 1,100 miles or so to Brisbane. To look at a map, is to see that it's about the same distance as flying all the way to the bottom tip of South America.
