In the pictures I'll be loading shortly are some pictures of the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals here in Brisbane...kind of.
The First Anglican Church was built in the 1860s. They outgrew it in a matter of years and acquired nearby land to build a cathedral. They started construction in 1906. In the last 1920s when the depression hit. work was suspended with only one wing in place. Work started again in the 1960's and then sputtered to a stop. same in the 1980s. Most recently the govt has instituted some work programs aimed at fostering local skills in stone-cutting and is now subsidizing the work. According to our tour guide yesterday, "God Willing" the cathedral will be finished in 2006...100 years after work began. Notice in those pictures the difference in color of the stone between old and new from passage of time.
Compare this to the Catholic cathedral...or rather it's lower wall. About the same time, the Catholic church decided it needed a new cathedral as well. the depression hit and all they had only built the lower wall and balustrade. but they had built it around the entire block. Nothing more was ever done and it served as a park for many years. recently apartments have been built inside the perimeter. they have a very nice security wall.
