We've been here several days; I guess it's time to talk about the money since it's driving us a little crazy.
Australia is apparently not too long into issuing new currency. Paper money is colored, with each denomination a different main color. Also the width is standard but the length of the paper bill increases as the denomination increases; the $5 bill is almost the size of Monopoly money while the $100 bill is approx the length of our currency. In between, the common bills are $10, $20, and $50.
Coinage is mixed. Fractional coins are in silver and follow the standard of larger is bigger. There is no penny. fraction coins are 50, 20,10, and 5 cents. Whole dollar coins are golden and work exactly the opposite: the $1 coin is about the size of our quarter and the $2 coin is the size of a dime.
You may have noticed I mention some fairly large (by US measures) denominations of bills. The australian currency is very depreciated compared to US...in fact $1AUD is equal to approx $0.52US at present. that means thing cost considerably more in AUD and thus the need for bigger bills and less small coinage. Basically the $100 Australian bill is only about $52 US. That also means that to us, things tend to be pretty cheap.
