Yesterday we did tour St. JOhn's Cathedral...the Anglican Cathedral that will (hopefully) by completed in 2006, 100 years after being completed. There is a picture sequence. It is beautiful inside and out. Muriel was our guide. She immigrated from England over 40 years ago. Said she came out because it was a cheap way to see the world (if you agreed to stay and settle for at least 2 years, England subsidized your trip) and never got around to going back.

There is beautiful stained glass, with scenes from Revelation on one side and from Genesis on the other. She was careful to point out that the creation scenes included the Kangaroo. Notice the pictures of the chair bottoms. They were all needlepointed.

The samples we shot were from a series of chairs depicting the birth of Jesus...with a twist. All the scenes are set in modern times. When Mary visits Elizabeth: they are having a cup of tea. Instead of shepherd visiting in the night: Police, Fire, bus drivers and other night-time workers. Thus, instead of magi bring gifts: local business people. When fleeing to Eygpt: they buy tickets on the busline. You get the picture. As strange as that may sound, it does make you consider the "realness" of the story as it is described.

As huge as the Cathedral is, it only averages 400 people worshiping on any given Sunday. It is frequently used to exhibit art...we purchased a book with pictures of the facility which was photographed at the time and exhibit of Kites were one display. In one wing, they display the decommissioned regimental flags from the Queensland military units until they're "fort pieces". I had to ask Muriel twice before I finally understood she wasn't saying "fort pieces" she was saying until "they fall to pieces". They talk a little fast here.

Muriel also gave us suggestions of other churches locally to visit if we were interested in the architecture. Of course, she said, some of them were very "Low Church"...in fact, one of them was "practically Presbyterian" in the way they worship!!!

We cam away struck by the beauty, but also with the feeling that this building was probably more a symbol of the State Church than a place were much true worship took place.
