Today was our first full day in Sydney and the weather started out dicey. It had rained last night, starting around 9:00 and continued off and on throughout the night. By morning it had stopped but was threatening. We grabbed a quick bite and started off for the Governor's Domain, a large area of parks and gardens set aside by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in the early days of the colony. The Royal Botanic Gardens are the major part of this, with a scenic outlook called Mrs. Macquarie's Seat, on a point of land overlooking the harbor. Convict labor was used to build the original road all around the Domain and to hack a bench out of the stone cliff at the point for the Governor's wife to have a seat. The gardens are beautiful, with all sorts of plants and footpaths.
Farm Cove separates the Gardens from the Opera House on one side. On the other side a small inlet separates the gardens from a major shipyard/port for the Australian Navy.
After leaving the Gardens, we made our way past the Art Gallery of New South Wales and looked at Sydney Hospital, still using some buildings from 1879-ish and some of the other old govt buildings in that area. Finished up the morning going through Hyde park and taking pictures of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
