When you ask most people who Captain Bligh was, they immediately think about the Mutiny on the Bounty, and probably have seen either the movie with Marlon Brando or the recent remake with Mel Gibson. Bligh is usually thought of as being stern and provoking the mutiny by being inflexible. There is more to the story, though.
When the mutiny occurred, Bligh and 19 of loyal sailors were put overboard in a 12 foot long open boat with a small sail and provisions for 2 weeks. When loaded, the gunwales of the boat were only 8 inches above water. At his request the mutineers also allowed him to take along his navigation instruments. A few days later, Bligh and his men went ashore on an island to reprovision; the natives attacked and one man was killed. This caused them to decided not to land again. Over the course of 44 days, Bligh managed to sail this boat over 2,700 miles through the South Pacific to Java in the Dutch Indies with no more loss of life. Bligh was considered a hero in England, a court martial found him innocent and set out to punish the mutineers. but there is still more to the story of Captain William Bligh and it involves Sydney...
Because of his record, Bligh was later tapped to become Governor of the colony of New SOuth Wales in Sydney. He (although a naval officer) was especially assigned to break the power of the Army Unit then serving in NSW, said unit having grown corrupt in smuggling of rum into the colony. He was perhaps too effective. On what later became Australia Day, in 1808, the Army Unit rebelled and placed Bligh under house arrest for the following 12 months. Although the rebellion was crushed, none were punished. Bligh later returned to England and died in 1817.
In the harbour here in Sydney is a replica of the Bounty, built during the Mel Gibson remake of the movie. In today's pictures you can see pictures of the Bounty and the boat Bligh sailed to safety on. You'll also see a statue of Bligh near Circular Quay on Sydney harbor.
