As the rain was beginning I struck up a conversation with an older lady clerking at the store where Gwenn and Lynn were shopping. I told her how much we were enjoying the city. She asked where in the States we were from and then tried to put that location into some sort of context. She said something to the effect "Do you get many Asian immigrants in that area?" I told her that was primarily West Coast. She launched into a discussion about the problems Australia was having with immigrants: in particular large groups of Afghans, Palestinians, and Indonesians. She talked about the big issue just before we got to Australia involving a group that had broken out of a refugee camp and begun causing a great deal of trouble.
We talked about the cameras, and she had much the same feeling as the cabbie yesterday, although her take on it was that the need for them represented a change for the worst in Australia...that Australian kids didn't get into major trouble, that the crime problems were largely a result of all the immigrants. She no longer feels safe to dress up when going to the Opera House and feels the need to be extra careful walking to and from the store.
It was interesting to see many of the same concerns talked about publically and privately in the US are present here as well. Only "the names have been changed to protect the innocent."
