This morning Gwenn and I toured downtown Sydney while the Hutchinsons took a bus tour. It was pretty dreary today with a steady drizzle.

Out first stop was the ANZAC memorial at the far end of Hyde Park. I mentioned ANZAC Park the was outside out hotel in Brisbane. The memorial here is probably the national monument, built in the ealy 1930's originally to commemorate the losses in WWI. As in Sydney and in several other places, we saw again the prominent slogan "Lest we forget...". The museum in the bottom of the monument did an excellent job of highlighting just why the Australians feel so strongly about honoring their armed forces.

Australian troops served Britain as colonial forces in the Boer War in South Africa, the Boxer Rebellion in China and the Sudan rebellion. WWI came shortly after the Australian colonies federated and began to think of themselves as a truly separate country. ANZAC troops bore the brunt of the disaster at Gallipoli (there was a movie made about it several years ago). 29,000 troops went in initally. Seven months later, the Aussies had suffered 7,800 dead and over 15,000 wounded. They were also present at Ypres in France where poinson gas was first used.

Ponder this: with a present population of 18 million, the population at the time of WWI was considerably smaller, approx 4.5 million. Yet Australia sent 330,000 troops into WWI. 60,000 men - 1 in every 5 - died. 220,000 men - 2 out of 3 - were casualties. Small wonder then that they feel strongly about this. While fighting heroically in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and smaller regional conflicts in Indonesia and Malaysia, the Australians have never since experienced such bloodiness as in WWI.
