One thing we've noticed more in Sydney than in Brisbane is the very strong focus on the rights of Indigenous Peoples (once known as Aborigines). In Australia, the Indigenous people were treated in much the same manner as the American Indian. In the last 30 years there has been increasing efforts to recognize the heritage of these peoples and make amends for past mistreatment. When we visited the Australian Museum this morning, one whole wing was devoted to Indigenous peoples and focused not only on their culture but also on the corrective efforts. You'll notice a number of shots from the exhibits in today's pictures.

The "Dream Time" is the Aborigine term for the beginning of the world, when everything was asleep and waiting to be awakened by the Rainbow Serpent. Aboriginal art is extremely complicated and detailed stories captured within the art. Much of the art is specific to particular clans or families and permission must be obtained from that family before another aborigine can duplicate the picture or paint a copy. There is knowledge that is considered sacred and in some cases secret that can only be shared by members of the clan.

For almost 90 years, official Australian policy was to try to "protect" the children of Indigenous peoples and improve their lot in live by raising them "white". This effort ranged from things as simple as forcing the children to attend white schoold, to requiring them to transact business in English, to going so far as to remove children from their families and placing them in orphanages or English foster homes. The Aboriginal term for the impact of all of these efforts on their children is the "Stolen Generations".

If all of this has an air of "political correctness" about it, that may well be the case; just as with the American Indian, there really is no argument about the historical record. But in Australia, policy since about 1970 has been to make positive steps to change things, and Indigenous Peoples now have a fairly significant amount of power. What they ultimately do with that power remains to be seen. At present, most effort seems to be focused on making sure the heritage is not lost.
