After all the rain last night, we were concerned about what today would bring. This morning, it looked like the weather would break our way. It had stopped raining during the night and the wind had picked up and begun to dry the sidewalks. Unfortunately, as we began our daytrip, it began again.
The Blue Mountains lie west of the Sydney basin. They are part of a chain that runs the eastern length of Australia and separate the coastal cities from the dry interior. There are several National Parks in this area just outside of Sydney, and the daytrip was intended to show us some of the sights in those parks.
We suspected the trip might be "interesting" when we realized that we would be traveling in a 4-wheel drive vehicle that seated 12 people. You'll see a picture of it. It looked almost like a van on stilts. Rod was our guide and as is usually the case with cabbies and tour guides, Rod had the gift of gab. The 4 of us were the only ones on the tour except for a couple from Nottingham, England; so there was plenty of room in the vehicle.
First stop was the Featherdale Wildlife Park. We got a few more animal shots and the rain began in earnest. Meanwhile we picked up one additional couple, fom the Philadelphia area.
Next stop, about 30 minutes further out, was a drive along an old road (as in, chisled out of the side of the mountain by convicts in the mid 1800s, over one mountain, down the other side, across Bowen Creek Gorge, and back up the next mountain. Now we knew why the 4 wheel drive. More than a few eyebrows raised when we drove past a sign that said "Road closed, no cars past this point". I suppose technically we didn't count as a car. Most of the shots came from this part of the trip. This was a one-lane road, approx 10 ft across, on a ledge literally cut from the side of the mountain. It was raining, and you could at times look out the window and straight down the side. Meanwhile we're bumping along, swaying to and fro across potholes, occasionally swerving MUCH TOO CLOSE to the wrong side of the one lane path to avoid a pothole seemingly big enough to swallow the vehicle, while Rod casually continues to talk about the flowers and the trees and periodically taking one of his hands OFF the steering wheel to point something out. The man obviously had prior arrangements with God because he seemed to have no concerns whatsoever at this point.
Eventually we made it across the gorge, stopped at a couple of additional picture spots and ended up at a small inn on top of Mt. Wilson for lunch. After lunch, we caught a couple of added spots, including The Three Sisters. It had gotten considerably colder and windier.
Rather than try the last spot, we all agreed with a change in plans that would allow us to look around the Olympic site. And then home by 6:30. Not a great day overall, but after such wonderful weather up to this point, not bad. The things we did get to see were incredibly beautiful.
