It was rainy again this morning but we ventured out to try and catch a few last things before we leave tomorrow. One stop was the Sydney "Coathanger" as Sydneysiders refer to the bridge across the harbor. If you look at various pictures from the past few days, you can see why they call it that. Until the construction of the opera house in the 1960s, the bridge dominated the harbor. Now it anchors the harbor on th end opposite the opera house.
The bridge was built in 1932 as a public works project during the Depression, although planning had been going on for several years prior to that. In fact, the approaches in The Rocks area on the Sydney side of the harbor had been purchased by the got over 20 years before after a tremendous epidemic of bubonic plague.
Tour to the very top of the bridge are available. If you look in some of the pictures, you can see people making the climb. In the museum there is a panel that talks about the fact that the workers were not provided safety equipment and initially were not even provide extra pay for working the heights. They took their case to an arbitration court. According to the exhibit, the judge actually climbed up onto the girders himself, took one quick, nervous look around, and said "Give them what they want".
Bill and I went up onto the obervation area on top of one of the pylons on the approach. the views are great!
