The weather that we experienced yesterday in the Blue Mountains hit Sydney by force later in the evening and all day today. Last night one of the large jet cat ferries to Manly, on the outer edge of the harbor, was swamped by a 23 foot wave. The wave washed all the way through the boat, tearing loose chairs and rails. It was the result of rough seas and the wake of a passing freighter. No fatalities, thank goodness, but 12 were treated for abrasion and the pilot was hospitalized. Lynn and Bill had been out on the jet cat to Manly the night before and we had considered it before the weather turned sour.
We awoke this morning to discover that the wind chill had dropped alomst 20 degrees, primarily because the wind was gusting fairly constantly at around 30-40 mph. Still heavy drizzle, but we didn't have enough sense to stay in. When we got back to the room this afternoon we discovered that because of the squalls the harbor had been closed, preventing not only freighters but also a cruise ship from entering the harbor today. They are supposed to reevaluate the situation tomorrow. This weekend was supposed to be a big yacht race but for the first time in 16 years it was postponed. The news says the last time it was this bad was in 1998; they raced anyway that year and had 7 fatalities during the race.
Later today the harbour patrol rescued several men from a small coastal freighter that broke up and sank and also had to life out a couple of surfers that got caught by out of control waves. Different areas of the city also suffered brief intermittent blackouts as the winds interrupted breakers.
Onshore none of this was really obvious, aside from the heavy winds, but we'll hope that the winds die down a bit before we have to fly out in the morning.
