While we were at the National Maritime Museum today, the guide had some interesting comments about immigrants that shed some light on the conversation I'd had with the clerk at the store in Argyles.
Until the late 1940s, Australia had a very restrictive immigration policy...mostly only wanting white, English speaking types. After WWII, the policy changed and the govt began to be more willing to accept any nationalities.
This gentleman was of the opinion that when the policy changed it allowed a bunch of "Shrewdies" (his term for entreprenuer) to enter the country and the economy finally began to take off and move from agrarian to move mixed with business and industry.. i wanted to tell him that has had a lot to do with the success of our country from early on, but he already alluded to that.
Anyway, the tremendous increase in immigration is changing the face of Australia. Meanwhile, the change is causing distress in some parts of the society. We've certainly noticed it. many of the lower paying sorts of jobs are held by people with non-Australian accents...and not just Asians.
This morning was the ultimate multi-cultural experience. We had breakfast in the historical district at a place called Pancakes on the Rocks. American pancakes in the Australian historical district, in a room with American Country music playing on the jukebox and with an Asian waiter serving us food cooked by an Indian cook
