When we started this trip and I set out to upload comments and pictures I said one reason was to see if the world was truly becoming a smaller place because of such tools. So now, 10 days later can I answer that question?
I think I'd have to say: in some ways.
More than anything, I think I've become more convinced than ever that Time is relative and is constructed for human convenience more than anything else. We started the week with 28 hours elapsed travel time to get here. 210 years ago, the first colonists here took 252 days to make the trip (their layovers along the way were measured in weeks not hours, but it's still a long time in a boat).
This week we've been able to message to friends and children and communicate in a matter of seconds but found that it would only work if we were careful about what the time was at home as well as here...not so much the DAY, as the local TIME. To the extent that most business is almost always conducted based on local time wherever you are, the world can never be small enough because we can't all conduct business at the same time conveniently.
What I have learned is that the tools can make different parts of the world seem CLOSER. the same tools that let us zip emails back and forth across town let us zip messages back and forth across the world...and in about the same amount of time. For people like missionaries and overseas workers, it can truly make home seem almost like it's around the corner.
Communication is faster. Methods of traveling are faster. Distance is the same.
