Larry Craig's Wrap Up of 109 Congress on:

Defense and National Security

For the past year, Congress has been debating the proper framework for the electronic surveillance program run by the National Security Agency (NSA). This issue touches two critical interests: the President's authority to protect our country, and the constitutional rights of U.S. citizens who are or become targets of surveillance. The 109th Congress adjourned before we could resolve this issue through legislation, and the courts may weigh in on the matter before the next Congress can do anything more than hold additional hearings. I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that my concerns on this issue are addressed in any bill brought to the Senate for a vote.

Over the last two years, Congress has aggressively pursued the interests of our national defense and I look forward to continuing our efforts to make our country safer. We've made progress in the war on terror, and I hope the appointment of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the findings of the Iraq Study Group will bring a fresh set of options to the table. We are taking important steps toward bringing stability to the Middle East and reducing the threat of terrorism around the world.

9/11 Commission grades government on defense and National Security: Five F's, 12 D's, two incompletes and only one A, which translates to a grade-point average of 1.8
