OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
Fifteen years ago, the result of the hard work of dedicated advocates throughout the nation, were seen when landmark legislation, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), was signed into law on September 13, 1994. On September 14, 2009, President Barack Obama commemorated the 15th anniversary of this historic law in a Presidential Proclamation <http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Presidential-Proclamation-15th-Anniversary-of-the-Violence-Against-Women-Act/> : " Far too many women in our communities and neighborhoods, and across the world, continue to suffer from violence. Inspired by the promise and achievement of the Violence Against Women Act, our Nation stands united in its determination to end these crimes and help those in need. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim the Fifteenth Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act. I call upon men and women of all ages, communities, organizations, and all levels of government, to work in collaboration to end violence against women."
NEW DAY SHELTER INSTITUTES NEW COMMUNITY AWARD
New Day Shelter is seeking nominations from the community for their new Passageways to Peace Award. The award will give special recognition every October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month to an individual (or group) who has made a significant contribution to positively impacting domestic violence and/or sexual abuse victims and/or the movement, and has some affiliation with New Day Shelter in connection with his/her contribution. Typical activities that would merit nomination are fundraising, awareness raising, service collaboration, direct services to clients, shelter facility maintenance/refurbishment, influence on social policy issues, literary/artistic works, etc. Nominations for the award are open to anyone. The award will be presented to the selected recipient on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event. The nomination form is attached, and can also be obtained by calling 715-682-9566. Nomination forms must be submitted for consideration no later than September 15. The award was established last October in honor of New Day Shelter’s former Executive Director Yvonne Aronson who received a lifetime achievement award for providing passageways to peace as part of the shelter’s 25th anniversary observance.
