Eleven Flags
Over the Ouachita
There have been eleven different flags
that have flown over the Ouachita
valley since its discovery
almost 500 years ago.

FIRST EXPLORATION
OF THE OUACHITA
The Spanish Flag was carried by
Hernando DeSoto when he explored the
Ouachita Valley in 1541 |

FRENCH TERRITORY
The French flag flew over the Ouachita
Valley when France claimed the
Province of Louisiana in 1682 |

SPANISH TERRITORY
The Spanish flag replaced the French
in 1769 when the Ouachita Valley was ceded
to King Charles III of Spain |

ENGLISH TERRITORY
The English flag flew over the Ouachita
valley
in 1763 when the Treaty of Paris relinquished
theTerritory to England. |

FRENCH TERRITORY
Spain won the territory back in 1779 in a
battle with English forces in Baton Rouge, but
later ceded the territory to Napoleon Bonaparte
of France, raising the French flag over the
Ouachita valley once again |

UNITED STATES
TERRITORY
The Ouachita valley was ceded to France for
only 20 days in 1803 - then the Flag of the
15 United States of America was raised on
April 30, 1803, when the U.S.A. signed the
the Louisiana Purchase with France. |

CIVIL WAR PERIOD
In 1861 , at
the beginning of the Civil War
Louisiana seceded from the Union and adopted
the Louisiana Flag, which flew over part of the
Ouachita valley for a short period of time. |

Civil War Period
In 1861, Arkansas seceded from the
Union
along with Louisiana, and adopted the flag
of the Confederate States of America, which
flew over the Ouachita valley until 1865. |

USA TERRITORY
The flag of
the United States of America has
proudly flown over the Ouachita valley since
the end of the Civil War in 1865. |

LOUISIANA TERRITORY
Today. the state flag of Louisiana also
flies
over the southern part of the Ouachita valley. |

ARKANSAS TERRITORY
Today, the state flag of Arkansas also
flies
over the northern part of the Ouachita valley. |
