Reviews of Scattered Rainbows
Clovita Rice Editor of Voices International (poetry journal), Life long member of Poetry Society of America, Recipient of the Arkansas Award of Merit, Designated Arkansas Poet of the Present
“This second volume of Circle of Life Trilogy by Carol L. Funke and Patricia A. Oplinger, focuses on the rainbow refractions the two have encountered in life and encourages their readers (quoting from Oplinger) ‘to intuit things beyond their substance’.”
“The words of the poem ‘Sunset Through the Trees’ and the accompanying painting beautifully illustrate the poet and the artist tracking together. The stark black lines and shapes of trees are the ‘splashes of sadness’ that too often darken a day, while the red interspersed among the trees is the joy of the day. Scattered Rainbows is a wake up call, provoking awareness that there is more to appearance than the casual observer realizes … The book is beautiful! I love the vibrancy of it, both the paintings and the writing.”
Cathy Demko Artist recognized by the National Arts for the Parks, ranks in the top 18% of Oil Painters of America, an Official United States Coast Guard Artist, listed in Who’s Who in America
“The beautifully written poetry exposes life as we have all experienced it, but never realized it could turn into poetry. After reading this book for a few pages, I understood life is an unwritten poem with many canvases to be painted. I enjoyed the book very much as it spoke ‘woman’. Also I felt the challenge of the art and the poetry were met. Both the writing and art are profound … ‘Bounceabout’ is written so well I almost needed Pepto-Bismol when I finished reading it.”

ESP─Essay, Stories, Poems
One of the most striking pieces of art
is a stark, bare tree set against a landscape of snow waves and a frighteningly
lonely sky which occurs in ‘Now’.─a perfect picture of winter with the
admonition to “live not for some end …. live now.’ In that thought is the
essence of the poetry and art Carol and Pat have offered as a tribute to
friends, the ‘rainbow people’ in their lives.”
“From its striking yellow cover to its
memorable phrases and artistic renderings -- a rainbow lover’s pot of gold … a
spiritual collaboration between author and artist. From the title poem,
‘Scattered Rainbows’, is gleaned the essence of the book which is illustrated
with a panoply of color. Like life itself … a myriad of illusive sentiments and
colorful experiences. In ‘On Poetry’ the author attributes
to poetry the qualities of adaptability, inspiration, comfort, and surprise. In
the verses of ‘Three’ the artist uses a simple depiction of a patchwork quilt of
shape or texture, shade or depth, further identifying the profound recognition
of the three lives we all live. My favorite piece is entitled ‘If Only” – I
wanted to cry at one ‘if only’ and laugh at the next. ‘Reflection’, an image of
beauty, with its illustration of a muted vase and its quite ordinary contents,
contains one of the most memorable lines in the book – ‘I live down every road.’
