MAKING WORDS-  Lesson 21-  
Word Part-  ‘ay   ice’

                                                     (1  set large letter cards for  teacher)

  • sheets of paper/ or chalk boards/ magnetic boards

  • word part pattern sheets for classroom teachers        

Words:        ay   -   clay  days  may  hay  stay stayed  gray play player playing   replay  stray  spray
                   ice   -      mice  dice  prices  priced pricing  rice  nice  nicer  mispriced  spice  spiced
                   
We are going to begin making words today.

1.  Take 2 letters and make the word part ‘ay’.   What  letters  are these? ‘ay ’ 
                                 These are 2 letters together that make one sound. (Write ‘ay’ on your paper)

2.  Add 1 letter and make a 3 letter word may. (hold up 4 fingers-just after students place letters in
                                                       pocket chart) write it.
3.  Change some letters and make a 3 letter word ‘hay’.  Write it on your paper.
        Now  make  ‘play’     try  ‘replay’      make  ‘player’      now try to make  ‘playing’ 

4. Change some letters and make a 5 letter word ‘stray’.  Write iton your paper.
        Now make     stay       try ‘staying’        now  ‘stayed’  
5.  Now take out all the letters and make the 2 letter word part ‘ay’.  
    Try to make     ‘gray’          ‘tray’     try ‘clay’   
6.  Figure out how to make an 8 letter word ‘spraying’.        
             ( Write ‘it  on your paper.)
     (Circle the pattern that is found in all the words)  (take out all the letters for the next word part)

7.  Take 3 letters and make the word part ‘ice’.   What  letters  are these? ‘ice ’
                                                       (write ‘ice on your  paper.   When ‘c’ is followed by an ‘ e i or y’ is makes the soft‘s’
                                                          sound, and the power ‘e’ makes the ‘i’ say its name.
                                                            
8.  Add a letter and make a   letter word ‘mice’. (hold up 3 fingers- just after students place letters in
                                                       pocket chart)   (write mice on your paper)
         Now make..  dice      rice     nice   nicer   

9.  Change some letters and make a 5 letter word price.  Write ‘price’ on your paper.
                      Try to make the 6 letter word    ‘prices’          try  ‘priced’    and   ‘pricing’   

10.  Change some letters and make a 5 letter word ‘spice.’  Write it on your paper.
        Now try to make   spiced    

11.  Lets try to figure out how to make the 9 letter word ‘mispriced’ 

12.  Look at the words on your paper and in the pocket chart, and see if you know the
        word part patterns that we’ve learned.  Circle the pattern that is the same in all the words.

 
13.   “  Write”     It was a nice day in May to play and stay at Pats to eat spice  cake.

14.  Distribute and read together   ‘ ay   ice ‘ puny  books.  Conference with the book and record
        on their reading record sheet.

We are going to begin making words today.

1.  Take 4 letters and make the word part ‘ight’.   
               Theseare 4 letters together that make two sounds. You will hear the first antthe last sound.  The sounds in the
                 middle aresilent. (write 'ight' on your paper)

2.  Add 1 letter and make a 5 letter word 'sight'. (hold up5 fingers- just after students place letters in pocket chart) write it.

3.  Add 2 letters and make a 7 letter word ‘sighted’.  Write it on your paper & circle the word part 'ed'
        Now  make  ‘sighting’,

4. Change some letters and make the 5 letter word ‘might’.  
      
5.  Add 1 letter and make the 6 letter word  ‘mighty’. What special sound do you hear at the end, and what special letter makesan'e' sound at the end, but is not an 'e' .   **Write 'mighty' and circle the letter that makes the sound of 'e'.
  
6.  Clear your letter trays.  Make the 4 letter word part  'ight’once again.        
           
7.  Add 1 letter to make the 5 letter word 'tight'.

8.  Add 2 more letters to make the 7 letter word 'tightly'.  Write it on your paper anc circle the 2 letters together that make the sound(lee)
      Try to make  'night'        Nextadd two letters to make 'nightly'  

9.  Change some letters and make a 5 letter word price.  Write ‘price’ on your paper.
                      Try to make the 6 letter word    ‘prices’          try  ‘priced’    and   ‘pricing’   

10.  Change some letters and make a 5 letter word ‘light.’  Add2 letters to make 'lightly'  ....write it and circle the 2 lettersthat make the sound 'lee'  

11.  Lets try to figure out how to make the 7 letter word ‘delight.’ 
         Next think about what 2 lettersyou would add to make the 9 letter word 'delighted'.  Circle the 2 lettersthat make the sound 'dee' and circle the 2 letters that make the sound 'ed'.

12.  Look at the words on your paper and in the pocket chart, and see if you know the
        word part patterns that we’ve learned.  Circle the pattern that is the same in all the words.

 
13.   “  Write”     Tonight Bill might try to light the delightful night light .
