FULL EMPIRE 130 RULES FOR 2002

THE RACE:

 The race will feature two classes: six-dog and eight-dog (new this year!).  Both classes will race a loop beginning and ending in Solon Springs.  This procedure will be repeated on the second day.  The six-dog class will travel approximately 24 miles each day and the eight-dog class will travel approximately 33 miles each day.

RECREATIONAL CLASS

    This race will be held on Saturday and will feature a two-dog and a four-dog class.  The two-dog class will travel two miles and the four-dog will travel four miles.

THE TIME:

    The race begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.  A mandatory driver's meeting will be held in the town garage on Saturday at 7 a.m.

THE ENTRY FEE:

    Entry fees are $80 for the six-dog and $100 for the eight-dog class.  Registration must be postmarked no later than December 29, 2001.  Late registration fee of an additional $25 will be charged after December 30th.  

THE RULES

    Complete rules will be mailed before race week.  All dogs require rabies, distemper, parvo and corona vaccination.  Adequate brake, brush bow, snow hook and/or snub line, showshoes and bindings, tool capable of cutting cable/rope gangline, booties (1 set for each dog), first aid kit (ace bandage and pressure bandages) and sled bag.

CANCELLATIONS:

     Full Refund - by December 12th postmark.

     Half Refund - by December 26th postmark.

If forced to cancel the Empire 130 will be rescheduled for January 26th & 27, 2002.

THE WINNERS:

    There will be a presentation of awards in the Town Hall following the arrival of the last finisher on Sunday.  Purse pay down will be 10 places based on the number of entries in each class.  Trophies will be awarded in the Recreational Class.

COME JOIN THE FUN

The public is invited and encouraged to visit the mushers and take part both days.  There are excellent photo opportunities along the trail.  Souvenirs and refreshments will be available.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Empire 130 will run near an area originally logged in the early 1900's by the Empire Logging Company of Winona, Minnesota.  This vast area west of Solon Springs is still 

called the "Empire" today.

Solon Springs is 32 miles south of Superior, WI on U.S. Hwy 53.  The Empire 130 Sled Dog Race starts at the Solon Springs Town Garage 1/2 miles west of Hwy 53 on County Road A.
